As I detailed in my last post, searching for a new home requires research and Boston was an easy starting point. I just got back from an impromptu trip in service to that mission. Joined by my friend Mike, we embarked on this journey with last-minute tickets, a sense of adventure, and a curiosity to uncover firsthand what life in Boston might be like.

Boston beckoned for many reasons, not least of which was a sense of unfinished business. The pandemic thwarted my planned two-month stay in spring 2020 for the I-Corps program I was participating in at the time. Boston on paper has a lot: its world-class education and research institutions, thriving startup scene, and bustling yet manageable pace of life. Nature is in close proximity (i.e. Vermont and Maine) and the New York City hub isn't too far. The airports make travel easy and there's actually a reasonable transit network. Plus, the city's vibrant community of young professionals adds to its allure. As I've always believed, thorough research is crucial before making such a significant decision. Yet, sometimes, nothing compares to being there in person – which is why I seized the opportunity presented by an affordable plane ticket.

Our adventure took us through the heart of Boston's diverse neighborhoods - from the scenic Boston Commons to the unique vibes of Jamaica Plain, the waterfront allure of Southie, and the intellectual charm of Cambridge. I really could feel the historical charm, whether it was the cobblestone streets or centuries-old foundation stones. Each area offered a different flavor of Boston life, making our trip rich and varied. On our first night here, we ventured to Fanuell Hall and the surrounding area which was hosting some kind of Fishermans festival this week. One highlight of our trip was visiting the USS Constitution after a hike from Bunker Hill. This historic ship, nestled in the Boston Harbor, is a testament to the city's rich maritime history and was a truly awe-inspiring sight. We also ventured to Somerville, where we indulged in some of the most amazing Nepali cuisine, adding a delicious international flair to our Boston experience.

I have to say, the combination of a high walk score, excellent schools, and a thriving startup and innovation economy have me sold on the city. As I walked the city's streets, I felt the pulse of a place that perfectly blends its historic roots with a forward-looking vision. While locals may complain, for someone like me who is visiting from Detroit, the efficient public transit system greatly impressed me. We traversed the city on foot and by public transport, fully immersing ourselves in the local lifestyle. My favorite part was utilizing the public bikes near our Airbnb and simply riding through the city. Not once did we feel the need to Uber, which speaks volumes about the convenience and connectivity of this city. I would gladly stop my monthly car payment and get a transit pass instead.

While summer in Boston was an absolute delight with its vibrant energy and sunny days, I'm mindful of the notorious New England winters. As my journey to find a new home continues, Boston stands out with its unique blend of history, culture, innovation, and community spirit. I left the city filled with new experiences and a deeper appreciation for its charm and potential. I hope to return one day, perhaps as a resident.
